Mazda BT 50 & Pickup TrucksWhile Mazda may not be known for their trucks, they have always produced quality reliable trucks for both hauling cargo, or simply crusing. BT 50
Stock B2200 5spd. Restoring for my dad. The truck was running rough, and has 105k miles with factory plugs, wires, rotor & cap. SO I replaced all these with good parts from Rock Auto. Now, the engine will not start up. It just sputters during cranking. I have gone through everything thing I can think of including replacing the old parts. Any ideas of what to check??
1. I would check that you did knock knock any wires off the coil terminals.
2. Turn key to "Run" position and leave it there; check for voltage at Positive terminal at the coil.
3. I would check for spark in the spark plug wires using a strobe timing light, a simple spark test tool, or having helper crank the engine after you've stuck a bolt into the plug end of the spark plug wire while you hold that bolt about 1/16 inch from engine metal; then do similar with coil wire at its distributor end.
4. Check the spark plug wires firing order 1-3-4-2 first. Distributor pictures below, #1 on engine is front.
5. If all above all fails, I'd replace your old parts one at a time.
I have never had good luck with the Platinum spark plugs in the Mazda trucks. I stick with the standard NGK like Cusser uses, and I have used the Motorcraft standard style plugs before with good results. I think most of these trucks are in a higher mileage category, and the platinum plugs seem to not like deposits of any kind. Maybe if the ignition system had a much higher voltage spark than stock, they may like that better. Just my 2 cents.
