Hey - had my 92 b2600 for three years and didn't understand it until I managed to get an original owners manual. What it says is that the front wheel mechanism automatically locks when you shift to 4H or 4L. The RFW light comes on to indicat this. While the light is on you can shift from 4H or 4L to 2H and back to 4H or 4L while moving. When you shift back to 2H the light stays on indicating that the front wheel mechanism is still locked. You can unlock it by pressing the RFW switch and the light goes off. You shouldn't run with the RFW with on while in 2H unless you need to because it causes noise, tire wear and excessive fuel consumption. If the light doesn't come on when you shift to 4H or 4L or if it doesn't go off when you are in 2H and push the button then you could have a malfunction. Now I finally understand. Rolomac

If the hubs don't unlock when trying to disengauge 4wd you are suppose to drive it in reverse for about 15 ft. If they still don't unlock after you've driven it in reverse and started forward again then you might have a problem. Also 4wd systems are designed to be used and may fail very quickly if they are not, even on a brand new truck. You should always use 4wd atleast 100-200 yards a month to make sure it doesn't fail.
