Finding side mirror for B2600 4x4
 

I have a nice old '88 B2600 SE-5 that I just put back on the road. I completed a Weber conversion, new brakes, new hand brake cables, and ball joints. It looks and drives pretty nice (for a 25 year old truck).

My only problem is finding a driver's side mirror. The current mirror is rusted and falling apart, so a replacement is needed. Unfortunately this truck doesn't have the usual corner mount mirrors that were the norm on B series trucks. This SE-5 series OEM mirror is mounted on a bracket that attaches to the door (almost like a mini towing mirror setup). Does anyone know where I can find such a mirror.

Dealerships are useless in my area. I've checked several, and they are no help with finding a part this old.

Sorry if it's bad manners here to necro, but I've got the exact same mirrors and I'm struggling to find any info on them. I've found a single driver side mirror for $80 (about $100 after shipping!) which I'm not inclined to pay, but my current replacement is a little gimpy one from amazon, and I'm very unhappy with it.

How difficult would it be to change the mirrors to a completely different mount? Could I swap them both for the older Ford style door mount tow mirrors that I've seen on the Ranger and Bronco? I know I can get a decent looking set from a nearby pick your part.

Does anyone have experience with mirror swapping/modification who could enlighten me? Should I just pony up the $100? Thanks! I'm out now, but I'll add some pictures soon.

The thumbnail shows what's termed the SE-5 tow mirror, on SE-models such as yours.

Unless you can fix yours with bodywork, you'll need to search parts yards, Ebay, classifieds, etc. I have such mirrors on my 1988 B2200 but mine are in good shape as I'm in Arizona.

So.......what exactly is wrong with your outside tow mirrors? Are they rusted out? Or are they loose? The reason I ask is because they can be fixed in some cases. On the Mazda tow mirrors, the mirror head is just slipped over an aluminum post, and it can be removed by grasping the mirror head and pulling upward on it while twisting it back and forth. If it won't pull off of it's aluminum post, then you may need to spray some lubricant in behind the glass mirror to lubricate the post some.

That's good information, Axel. My driver side tow mirror always seemed loose at highway speeds the last 20 years (1988 B2200 SE-5). Then it got worse and the mirror glass was loose, so I took it apart and re-glued it with silicone glue. Fine now.

It was loose, so I took it off and found that one of the two screws that hold it onto the pole wasn't all the tightened down. I tried to tighten it, but realized there was a nut on the other side of the plastic that I couldn't get to, so I unscrewed it (not realizing my mistake) and realized too late that the plastic housing is completely sealed. I've tried using a pry to separate the plastic from the metal, but no dice. I think it's glued, because it wouldn't budge. On top of that, the mirror itself is broken now, so I'd have to find a replacement glass anyways.
Not my shining moment in the sun.

On the bright side, I did redo the wiring for the license plate and got the interior dome light working by bypassing the switch, it's the little victories...
If you've got any know-how, I'd be glad to hear it. Otherwise I may just bite the bullet and get that replacement.

update for posterity, i ended up just getting the one i found on ebay. it's the exact mirror i was looking for and with no luck looking at you pick lots. easy install, does what it says on the can. i'll update with a picture tomorrow after a much needed wash.

Yes, this is something many of us will face as new parts become unavailable.

I have a 1971 VW Convertible and last Friday I purchased a used window regulator for it, as new are no longer available. Since the R&R is pretty involved and working blind, I decided to get the used part rather than rely on my ability to home-engineer a fix that will really work.

When I originally posted the thread about fixing your tow mirrors, years ago on a now defunct Mazda truck forum, I stated that you should not try to remove the two screws inside the mirror head (like you found out!) as it will ruin the mirror. Just spray some type of penetrant in there to help release the "grip" of the mirror head to the aluminum pivot pole, and pull the head off of the pole. I too ruined a mirror head when I loosened those two screws!
