Default Abs

Exactly how do the ABS on a 1990 B2200 work? What are the components, electrical and mechanical? How do they detect brake locking and how do they react to prevent it?

We are diagnosing the ABS light and brake lights illuminated on the dash.

Also, there is a scraping noise that sounds like it might be coming from the right rear wheel area, perhaps inside the drum.

What DTC's ( fault codes) do you have?

Well, I’m not sure we can access that info actually. It engine is the original 2.2 (rebuilt) but it has Weber swap and the computer in the kick panel is not currently installed. Can we access abs DTC’s without it?

Can't help, I don't have ABS on my 1988 or on my mid-section. Have you looked in the 1992 service manual available online?

That I can help with. Remove that drum (use two bolts 8.0mm x 1.25mm about 50mm long to extract the drum; you might need to back off the brake shoes through the backplate access slot first. Then take a good look at the shoes and hardware.

You can use the other side brake as a mirror image.

The scraping like noise turned out to be the driveshaft carrier bearing. I’m glad to discover this since it’s not a big deal. We confirmed it by putting the rear up on jack stands and running it in gear to zero on on where the noise was coming from.

So tell me this gents, why does a dinky B2200 need a split driveshaft with carrier bearing anyway? My longbed 2001 Silverado doesn’t.
