Default Testing a Distributor

How do I test to see if my distributor is working properly. According to the code " No signal from distributor". I am pretty sure I need 12v on one wire 5v on another and ground on the 3rd. Which I do have. The bearing is good inside no leaking oil and it turns the rotor fine.
How do I test the electrical side to find out if this is my problem with my 93 323 no start, no spark?
As I understand it, it is a closed loop and the ecu won't send a signal to throw a spark if there is no signal from the distributor.
