Default temperature guage

[]

Hi. I have yet another question regarding my 92 mazda 929. I had the timing belt replaced on my car a month ago, and the water pump went out on me week before last. I had the pump replaced and it fixed the problem with the car overheating. I'm wondering if I need to replace the thermostat because the temperature guage rises just below the red mark once the car heats up, then it returns to the middle mark. What is causing this? The car doesn't overheat but the guage rises and then falls. Do I need a thermostat?

Sure sounds like it could use a thermostat. It is usually very good idea to replace the thermostat anytime that the engine has been overheated as it can damage the bimetal spring that controls opening and closing.
