Temperature Blend Door Trouble
Hi,
I'm having a problem with the temp blend door and I am wondering if anyone else has ever run across this issue.. My 626 is a 1996 model with 458,000 miles on it. The little 2.0L four cylinder motor has never been opened up and other than normal replacement of worn parts such as brake pads, shocks and struts, water pump, etc..., the car just keeps going and going. The problem I'm having is that the blend door will not stay blowing cool air. Even though the slide remains on the cool side, the door will magically return to hot for no apparent reason. It generally will not stay on the cool side for any amount of time, although sometimes it may for 10 miles or so, and then it magically goes to blowing hot air. If I take the slide and move it to hot and back to cool, it may return to cool after one try, but sometimes I have to slide it back and forth many times before it returns to cool and stays, It may stay for a minute or two, or for 10 minutes, but it eventually returns to hot. I first thought it must be the actuator, but when I tore the dash apart and watched the mechanism, the motor seemed to be working in that I could slide the lever and the mechanism would change the blend door. Then for no reason, I could see the mechanism start to move to hot again. Sometimes it would move back and forth a a few times and then go to cool, or sometimes it would do this and end up on hot, all the while the slide is not being manipulated. Almost made me think it is a bad connection in the heater/temperature control box??? So, I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on where I should start. It's not a problem in the winter, but it sucks when it's 90 degrees out and the vents are blowing hot air. On a side note, the A/C compressor, I believe, besides needing to be recharged, seems to need oil or to be replaced. I just don't know if I want to stick any money into the car with the amount of miles on it. I generally don't drive it in the winter anymore, as I 'm afraid one of these days the engine will leave me sitting on the side of the road.
Thanks for any help with my problem.
