Default Question on Transmissions in 626

I have a 99 626. I have been reading that the transmission fails quite often. Is this true? Is there a certain VIN code of the ones with the problems or is it all? The one I got has 216K on it it is going to be a daily beater for a while, so I wanted to know should I be worried? And can anything help prevent the problem, and if they have problems what to look for?

Mazmart Trini is our resident expert on that subject. I know he is not too crazy about the auto trannies they put in the 626's of that time.
Perhaps I can entice him to come in and give you his expertise?

Do you know what other transmissions bolt up to the 4 cylinder engines? Will the 6 Cylinder engines transmission work or a protege transmission? One of my friends has both of these transmissions at his salvage yard, so I wanted to be ready in case it has problems. I would rather go with something that last than does not.

Ok. All CD4E (Ford) trans in the 626 are junk. They are very failure prone. Even buying a used one, you are taking a gamble, especially with that high of a mileage that you said is on that one. We have known a few rebuilt units to also live short lives.
