Default Cooling fan problem need help please!

I have a 1996 mazda 626 4cyl 2.0
Me and the hubby unplugged the fans tested them they powered on, then we changed the relay fuse then we change the sensor that is between the rad pipe and engine, we changed all the fuse's including the 100amp in the black fuse box in engine compartment. The fan was running fine before the upstream sensor was replace. Before we replace the 100amp we did a test where you turn on the a/c on high and the fan should kick in well it didnt until we change that fuse then we tried again and it work but when we let the car warm up and let it run for 5-10mins when we let it run for that long we hear what sounds like ticking noise not knocking ticking the fans didnt start but the car is not over heating the thermo gauge is at normal in the middle even when we drove it the gauge stayed in the normal postion just when we would park the car the fans would not start. But when we play with the ignation key on/off on/off the fan wants to start but dont stay on what are we doing wrong. I'm getting grey hairs on this car!!!!!!!! Thank You

by reading your description of hearing the clicking noise without actual connection (fan did not turn on), would it be a relay problem?
