Unhappy 1997 Mazda 626 ES - BELT OR CHAIN?

Ok, there is a knocking noise coming from my engine and two people have told me its the timing chain.

I call a shop today and the guy says it the timing belt, there is no chain. Running about $580

Is this mechanic trying to take advantage of me cause I am female?

Also he is telling me I may need new pulleys and a water pump. Ugghhh! these new items plus the timing belt $920

Which do I have? Which do I need or not need?

Please any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Maria,
A timing belt. And they usually do a water pump at the same time since its a PITA to get to unless doing the belt. The water pump will cost you, but should it go bad and you haven't done it, the labor costs would be the same as doing the belt alone. So another $580. Its just cheap(er) insurance.
If it's knocking you have, the belt tensioner/idler pulley is probably shot too.
I had a shop do the same to my Mitsu Expo years ago, belt and pump, and it was over $750 then, so the quote sounds about right to me. But you could always get a second, or third opinion.
