Default 1985 626 GC Auto"switch on accelerator"

As you all know with a vehicle of this vintage, constant maitance is reqired. As the vehicles net value is initially at this time small and depreciative, soforth all parts and labour costs are kept to a minimum.
My post involves a question about a switch on the accelerator pedal on my mazda. When fully depressed the switch clicks (opens). While driving and doing this (flattening the accelerator pedal) the three speed gearbox drops down one or two gears sometimes, depending on speed etc.
Is this the function of the switch ? to drop a gear if possible, or is it for the carby
Before I spend $50 on a book of schematics, I thought I would try to post on this forum which I regularly refer to for information.
I believe if something is broken improve it with a performance part, as I have done with this car, having many querks in this car isn't enough as I plan to do a modification involving this switch (this time not that its broken but since my transmission seems to be out of date), if my assumption is correct.
