Default steering wheel free play

There is too much free play in the steering of my 85 rx7 with 55,000 miles. I seem to recall that the steering box can be tightened by the nut on top. Any suggestions? Thanks

i usually start with pulling the steering wheel and reinstalling it. that usually takes all of the play out of my wheels. sometimes, you do need to go into some more work.

RX have rack and pinion steering don"t they? It sounds like bj is describing an old steering box... recirculating ball or worm and sectortype.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the 1st gen RX-7s do have recirculating ball steering.

In that case, loosening the lock nut and giving the center screw to adjust the sector +/- a half a turn might just take care of the looseness. At least that"s how we always did it. But don"t go too far and over tightened it. That can be dangerous and hard on the internals too.
