Cap and Rotor?

Got a new cap for my distriator. I am getting the rotor at the end of the week and I need some help on putting the rotor on the right way.

I don't want to mess up my timing so I need some pointers so I can succsfully do this my self.

thanks

It is very easy to do. It can only go on one way. Just make sure you keep the plug wires in the same position on the new one.

So just take the Cap off, just unscrew the two screew or bolts that are there and just look at where the old rotor is and just put the new on on the way the old was?

Then just put the spark plugs on the way I took them off?

really that easy?!@

I was told all this crap about getting the engine to Top Dead Center befor I put the new one on.

Just make sure you put both the cap and rotor back into the original position you pulled them out. Don't crank your motor, or even loosen your distributor. Just pop off the cap, pull out the old rotor, put in the new rotor, transfer the plug wires from the old cap to the new cap one at a time so that you make sure you are aligning them properly (there should be a snap feature on the outer perimeter of the cap, use that for orientation.) Then reinstall the cap.

You have to worry about TDC if you pull the distributor out (Dist gear gets out of sync with the cam gear)

RE: Cap and Rotor?

when would I need to pull the distributor?

RE: Cap and Rotor?

you do not have to pull the distributor to do this.

the cap and rotor can only go on one way, so don't worry.

RE: Cap and Rotor?

when would I need to pull the distributor?

Only if you needed to replace the distributor gear (broken tooth) or the entire distributor went bad, or if you were tearing down your engine.
