Default Brakes checked out okay but very troubling issue

I have a Mazda Tribute 2002 and my brakes SOMETIMES FOR NO REASON don't feel like they want to catch - meaning they seem to click, click, click (NO SOUND, just they way it feels) like they are trying to catch but it isn't a smooth action. Yes I do stop but it feels unsettling. I have had them checked at two places (Brake Check and an auto garage) and they say there is nothing wrong with my brakes. I was told that perhaps dirt or sand has gotten lodged in the brakes and the ABS come on. This is still worrying to me as it does not happen all of the time, usually a couple of times per journey, but it feels unsafe and I don't know what to do about it.
