Default Battery light

I have 2003 Mazda Tribute and put it in for a full service and the garage charged me over £400. After approx. 5-10 miles after I collected it I felt that something was wrong. It was then that I noticed the battery light was on and then I lost all power and the car stopped. I was able to restart it and bring it back to the garage. The garage said that two cells in the battery were dead due to overcharging. They then replaced the alternater and battery and charged me another £400. I indicated that i was surprised that this fault wasn't spotted in the service and they said they dont check for it. They only check battery fluid levels and 'specific gravity'. They also said that the problem could have happened after the service. I expressed some surprise that this could have happened so quickly. Could this happen this quickly (after 10miles driving)?? and if it couldn't should the garage spotted the problem in the full service?? Moreover, after they apparently repaired the car I went to collect it and the battery light was still on. They said that they must have installed a faulty alternator and will replace it! I'm suspicious that the original diagnosis was wrong and that the garage may have caused the problem. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding this?
