Default Tach Installation in 2003 Protege DX, Automatic

I would like to buy a tach for my 2003 Protege, but read that the install is complicated on my Protege, as there is no tach signal available at the ignition and you have to get the signal from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). However, I also read somewhere that a tach with a 1-cylinder engine setting and inductive spark plug wire pickup would work. Is this true?

Thanks.
