exhaust question..
I am looking into buying a new muffler for my car. The muffler is 3"(inch) in and 3"(inch) out. i was thinkink about going with a pipe of 2.5"(inches) from the cat-back. Any advice on this. would i lose power, instead of gain, how would the sound be, would it be a high pitch, rice sound, or a low rumble. the muffler is made by summit racing.
well, since no one answered my question, i will answer it myself. i am not getting the muffler. what is the point of having a 3" muffler, on a 2.5" exhaust on a NA motor, no point, thats what.
the only real time that you need 3" piping is when you're gonna go turbo even with 2.5 u still might lose some power, but all in all you wont really notice the loss between sizes unless youre a stickler for it, maybe 2.25 piping might be perfect but thats just my 2 cents, oh if you really want some gains change the cat also to high flo or a gutted one but the gutted is illegal
I dont have exhaust yet on my car, i am thinking about it, but got to many other things to do so i cant spend money on the car now, I just came across those mufflers on craigslist and thought about it, but 3" is to big for a non-turbo motor because of the power loss on the low end.
personally id rather save up first and get the whole system all at once instead of piece by piece, and a 3" is a little big for a non turbo but it does add alot of sound to it, the $265 system im getting has a 2.5in. custom pipe, with a magnaflow exhaust.
agreed, if you have a piping diameter of 3 inches, this is a set up for a turbo kit... if you are not putting a turbo on your vehicle, you typically only want to fluctuate about 1/4 inches from your factory exhaust size.
if you want a nice exhaust, you should probably go with the entire exhaust system. start with headers and work your way to a new y-pipe if possible followed by your high flow cats (very restrictive element) followed by your new exhaust. thats what i would do but that all involves money.
