Hurricane Ike!

Well y'all, it looks like hurricane Ike is coming my way, and even worse for those in South and East Texas, like wsoape281.
I'm @ home today and planning to batten down as many hatches as possible... tomorrow even more so.
Ike is supposed to come ashore and into Central Texas by Saturday. Winds of up to 111 mph (Cat 3) are possible, though 40-50 mph are more likely here. We live up on higher ground and are surrounded by valleys so hopefully we will be spared the worst of it, especially the flooding possibility. But we will likely lose power for a time.
I normally have about a <20 mile hike to workbut have already spoken to my bosses about the possibility of not making it in on Saturday as planned/scheduled.

Wes! Best of luck to you, Bud, and anyone else that's near Galveston, the Valley or Houston.

Just some rambling thoughts on the subject.

RE: Hurricane Ike!

we should be alright, but thanks for the concern. we live up on fairly high ground and have double paned storm windows on every opening. our house hasn't flooded yet, but you never know. after a few storms, you start to get a little callused to the whole thing. we have food, water, gas powered stove and water heater, and plenty of candles. every time that we try to evacuate, we get stuck in traffic and can't get anywhere, so that isn't going to happen again. if worse comes to worst, we can go to my shop where there is a generator and it is a good and high off sea level.

The most we get up here from the 'canes is some flooding...and I live about a block from the NYB. Best of luck to you both though. You can always just call Siber and have him get you from TN in his F150. :D

definintely be safe V1. the rain is supposed to be starting here tomorrow, so i just put the turbo II to bed and parked the p5 close enough to the house to help protect it. i am sure that insurance can fill in the blanks if anything happens, but it can't replace all of us. be safe to all of you in texas.

RE: Hurricane Ike!

Yeah, where has Ken been anyway? I've been thinking about him lately too?
I think we'll be all right here. We too live up high (for Texas) on a hill w/trees all around us, but none too close to the house. I am worried aboutthe one next to the shed though??? It's ready to go but it should fall backward, away from the building (I hope.)
I don't think they're expecting the rain to start here until tomorrow night some time, but winds are supposed to pick up during the day.
It's gonna be a long day @ work tomorrow though...... (Grocery business.)

RE: Hurricane Ike!

we went down by the water to see what the surge was up to. got some pics that i will post up later. this storm is a lot less powerful than they thought it would be originally, but we are now on the dirty side of the storm where we could have negative surge (run-off)on the island and all of the wind will be from the north. it looks like we are dodging new bullets on an hourly basis and they are expecting it to cut back to category 1 by the time houston gets the worst of it.

Battened down hatches ain't gonna do sh#t versus 20 foot waves, or 24 inches of rain in 24 hours.

yeah, i got some pics and a couple of videos already, but i haven't gotten around to uploading them. i was thinking that i should get a few more before i upload so that i can make a decent sized thread on it. i will also have to load the video on youtube to post it here, so that will take a little time.

Hurricane?? Who said anything about a hurricane??
Well guys, while I'm glad we will not be getting the 100mph winds and 3"s of rain in ten seconds, I also have to say that this has been the most disappointing storm ever.
Here in the Greater Austin area........... days of preparation (not sorry 'bout that though,) prepping at work for 10,000 customer above normal, and preparing for the rain we never got this summer and now NOTHING!!!! [sm=redx.gif]
Nothing but hot, EXTREMELYhumid weather and a 5-10mph breeze, also hot and humid.[sm=smiley19.gif][sm=smiley19.gif][sm=smiley19.gif][sm=smiley19.gif] [sm=smiley17.gif]
WE NEED RAAAAAINNNN!!!!
And my wife wonders why I don't EVER trust weather reports. Billions of $$$ in testing equipment, air craft, computers and satellite gear, great payand they still can't predict a Damned thing. The only profession that pays you well to be wrong all the time.

Wes, I hope you and yours are faring as well, but I kinda' doubt it based on the TV and web reports I've been seeing. It looks like you guys were in for a ride this morning.
Write us back when you can a let us know you are OK...

Well, it's floodin' down in Texas.... (hope you're doin' fine Wes)

RE: Hurricane Ike!

+1!!
I'm guessing we haven't heard from him because of power issues... and hopefully that's all.
According to the news (The Weather Channel/CNN) over 4 million ppl are w/o power in that area now. As hot and humid as it is here in Austin even now @ 6:30 AM, I hope for their sake it gets restored soon. Ya' need A/C 'round here. It's not an option.

RE: Hurricane Ike!

It looks like Ken is in for some of it too. TWC is talking 50+mph winds in Tennessee today.
Are ya' there, Ken?

I feel bad too, we're in the midst of a heat wave here in the NE.

RE: Hurricane Ike!

hey guys, back for a little while. my internet connection is still out and they said it may be for a while, so i am at the library checking in. the island and the peninsula took a really hard hit and i really feel bad for all of the people in those areas. both of my cars came through without a scratch and the rx7 didn't even get wet (it stayed in the garage). the last house that i lived in took a pretty hard hit, so i guess that i got out while i still could. personally, we are dry, cool, and pretty comfortable over all. gas is still at a high premium here, so the lines are long and everyone is freaking out like this is the end of times. we were really fortunate with all of the things we have just gone through.

Hey Wes!! Glad to have you back and that you (and your family and cars too) are OK. We got nothin' here but a little (re: very little) wind. I/wewere looking forward to getting a little rain out of this at least.
Hope everything is all right and coming back together for you.

If the stock market is any indication, this may indeed be the end of times.

RE: Hurricane Ike!

well, i am back online at my house. we are still running on a generator, but doing a lot better now. the stores are all open and there is no shortage of anything but premium gas. i have been having to run octane boosters in the rx7 just to put gas in it. still all good though.

Good to hear.

Yeah Wes, I'll second that. 'Glad you came through virtually unscathed. I've been talking to some driver's in my company that are still waiting for relief, yet they are coming to work anyway.

RE: Hurricane Ike!

here are a couple of pics. a tree leaned really slowly onto the house but didn't damage anything. the neighbors next door flooded and the neighbors across the street lost the front of their roof. it could have been a lot worse for us, as you can see from the pics.

Wes, when you get a chance would you look at this thread for me and see if you can answer this guys questions?
RX's are a little out of my league and realm of experience.

Why not apply for Mod status then? Just write Patrick. I'll support that decision.
