Thumbs up Future New Section - Mazda CX-3

MAZDA may be working on a new CUV, according to Auto Express. Reportedly called the CX-3, the small crossover will be engineered to take on the likes of the Ford EcoSport and Nissan Juke, but with a focus on fuel efficiency and engaging driving characteristics.

The report names no sources, but says the CX-3 will benefit from a new small-displacement diesel engine. The 1.6-liter oil burner will be joined by a 1.3-liter gasoline engine when the vehicle debuts in 2014. Auto Express reports the model may bow as a front-wheel drive offering only, with no all-wheel-drive option. the CX-3 could be capable of around 80mpg.

And what will it look like? That means the company's shield grille will make the jump, but with more plastic lower body cladding. Inside, Auto Express says the CX-3 will offer buyers fold-flat rear seating for extra cargo capacity.

I'm guessing/speculating that this is probably true, but I don't understand what Mazda is trying to accomplish these days?
They offered the Mazda2 as a cheaper, more fuel efficient, entry level car, then don't promote it or upgrade it?
They offer the CX-5 with their well touted Sky-Active Tech, but in a vehicle that could really use a few extra horses? That certainly seems to be the biggest complaint about it, and if Mazda does nothing about it, it will be a short-lived model as well, further reducing Mazda's creditability.
Now a CX-3 with a 1.3L petrol, or 1.6L diesel that appears to be the size of an overgrown Mazda2 with a face similar to the CX-5? I would think a 1.6 petrol, and a 1.3 (or 1.6L) diesel might be a better mix in the engine compartment? That 1.3 is liable to have no power at all in a vehicle like that.
In either case, it's not liable to live up to the Zoom-Zoom reputation Mazda has been working on for years now.

Time it with a US gas price spike to $6/gallon and it will be a hit.

Saw the Buick Encore at auto show, and that's pretty darn small (much shorter and somewhat narrower than CX-5 for example).

In 2014, Mazda will launch an even smaller crossover to satisfy demand for a really compact crossover. It will be called the CX-3 and will share its platform with the next Mazda2 supermini (next Mazda2 will be smaller like the mini)
Powertrain options could reportedly include a turbo 1.3-liter petrol and a 1.6-liter turbo diesel. The base models will come with a FWD to keep the price and fuel economy down.

During a private media dinner on the eve of today's opening of the 2012 Australian International Motor Show, Mazda CEO and Chairman, Takashi Yamanouchi and global sales and marketing execs spoke freely about the prospects of a smaller sibling to the CX-5 making it to production.

The so-called CX-3 has been the subject of significant speculation. Now burgeoning sales of the CX-5 worldwide and Mazda's commitment to parlay its own SKYACTIV platform technology into a homegrown replacement for Mazda2, make the mini SUV all but a done deal.

"We are studying [CX-3] as a global opportunity," General Manager Global Sales and Marketing, Yasuhiro Aoyama told motoring.com.au.
