Emissions test
Do I have to do an emissions test if I buy a car out of state and my state requires emission tests in certain city’s but not mine? Or is it just completely exempt as long as the city I live in doesn’t require it? |
Sorry for the late reply. Emissions testing requirements vary from state to state and apparently in Wisconsin from city to city. That would be a question that your local motor vehicle administration would need to answer. I would guess that if it is not required in your city, it is not required for you when you buy a car out of state and register it in your city, however, this is strictly based on the information you provided in your question.
I had several more questions when I considered buying a car out of state. Do I need to register it in the other state and pay their taxes to get tags to drive it to my state? Do I I have to pay both state's taxes? Can I get a refund of the double taxes paid? How do I go about transferring the title into my name? A lot of the answers to my questions depended on the rules from the other state. I called both state's motor vehicle administrations to figure it out. I ended up not buying the car in the end. |
