Please help! MX6 dies while driving. Distributor problem?

Hello all. I am a new member here and I was reading through the forum; it seems like there may be someone out there thatcould help me. I have a 1993 Mazda MX6 and while driving down the freeway the other day the car jerked a few times, sounded like it backfired, and the RPM's dropped to zero. It immediately started back up and the problem has been intermittent but is becoming more frequent now. Theproblem occurs when the car isnot under any particular load (such as going up a hill) and seems to happen only when the car is at normal operating temperature. Sometimes it also dies while coming to a stop. I have a friend who thinks it could be the ignition control module on distributor. I have read some other posts that seem to confirm that but I'd hate to throw that kind of money at the problem if thats not the correct diagnosis. The engine check light has not come on so I don't think there are any codes to check. Does anyone know of any checks I could do to see if the ICM or distributor is the problem, or does anyone have any idea on what's going on? Has anyone else experienced these types of symptoms?
Thanks,
Sockeye
