Hello from Boston!

Hi All,

I'm new to the Mazda scene, trying to learn more about Mazda 3s and Mazdaspeed 3s to purchase one (2010-2014 range) in the near future.

I'm excited to be part of the community!

Hello to Boston,

I have a 2015 Mazda3, so I don't have much to add regarding the prior generation. (I thought the 2014 was the current generation. If so this is a great car. If you are considering a Mazdaspeed3, make sure that if you get the current generation you get the 2.5 engine.)

What are you currently driving, what are you looking for in a new car?

Post more specific questions to the Mazda3 forum.

Thanks for the reply! I'm currently driving a '04 Ford Focus hand-me-down. Looking to buy my first car on my own so price is a big factor. I was attracted to Mazda 3s as a car that is fun to drive, efficient on gas, reliable, and can fit a few buddies and skis/bags to get up to the mountain. Mazdaspeed 3 caught my eye because who doesn't love a little extra power. However, the lower fuel efficiency and stiffer track suspension makes it a second choice at the moment.

I'm also looking at the Subaru Impreza around the same years. Though I have heard it has more mechanical issues than a Mazda.

Mazdas and Subarus are both cars with strong followings. My wife will never be happy driving anything but a Subaru and I am the same with Mazda. I find the brakes to be too soft on the Subaru. As for maintenance, I would say they are both in the same ballpark. They are not as cheap to maintain as a Honda but worth the slightly extra expense to drive what you want.

If you like to drive a car with sharper handling, I think you would be happier with the Mazda. If you need all-wheel drive in a reasonably priced car, go with the Subaru.
