CX5 Engine overheat

I have a 2012 CX5 diesel GrandTourer that I love.
Back in March of this year the master warning light came on and I took it back to the dealer and they replaced the battery.
A fortnight ago the master warning light came back on as I was driving home from work.
I took it to the mechanics the next morning and no warning light came on when I started the car.
The mechanincs could find no reason for the light to come on and could not make the light come back on again.
The following weekend I made a 900km road trip. 200km into the trip the master warning light came on. I stopped the car had a bot of a look, restarted the car and no light. So I continued on the journey woth no more lights coming on.
4 days after this trip the light came on briefly.
The following day I noticed what looked like oil under the car. Investigation showed that the radiator was completely empty and the overflow was full of burnt coolant. The oil turned out to be burnt coolant.
Another trip to the mechanic and I am told that at some time the car has overheated. Now there is no temp guage in yhe CX5 and at no time did a temp.light come on. The EGR is yested and looks fine si it is a probable head gasket problem.
Call to Mazda teveals that 2012 models have been known to overheat.
Has anyone else had a similar ezpeeience?
I am so angry that I had no warning for the overheating there is no way I would ever drive an overheated car.

if the 2012 has been known to overheat.. what was the known problem and more importantly the known fix?

We had this software upgrade back on 2016.
The car is at Mazda now looking for the cause.
They are not sure it was an overheating issue.
Have to wait and see.

Mazda's skyactiv 2.2 Diesels are common for overheating.

If caught early it's usually the radiator cap at fault, if not its new engine time. We replace a diesel engine about every week or two.

Get the radiator cap tested. Get a compression test & TK test done.

i was also wondering.. not related directly to the problem.. but what is the coolant change interval on the 2012 ?

10 yrs or 200,000kms / 120,000 miles

Do the vehicles give physical indications of overheating?

No, they don't, until its too late.

Mazda has agreed to replace my motor.
It is such a relief as I bought a new vehicle to avoid these sorts of problems and expenses.
Just wondering if I need to be vigilant with the new motor?
