Angry Cat and coil failure

Dear RX8 owners and experts

Our Mazda garage is asking us to change the cat and the 4 coils of our RX8 although we have never experienced any misfires in the 13 years we had our car and had an MOT carried-out less than 5 months ago which spotted no issue.

We brought our low mileage car for a technical maintenance check at this garage and as we were going to pick up the car we got a call last week from the garage saying that there were misfire problems with the engine as the car would no longer start.

We suspect that the garage flooded the engine by switching on and off the engine on their parking space and did only partial cleaning of the engine which should have taken up to 4 hours of labour.

They inspected the engine issue, changed a faulty spark plug last week and said that it was all sorted and ready for pick up. When I collected the car this week it stopped abruptly on the road after driving less than a mile.

The garage is now saying that the cat and 4 coils need changing for a 2000 bill. This diagnostic feels suspicious to us as it happens straight after their maintenance check and spark plug replacement and also because we never had misfires in the past.

What would you suggest for us to ask our garage to prove their dishonesty even if the circumstances talk for themselves? Also could you possibly let us know whether coils can be extracted from the car to allow us to assess in what state they are?

Thank you in advance for your support.
Sophie

I think a independant garage needs to give you a second opinion. Find someone who has experience with RX-8s.

Using a spark tester will show the output of each coil.
