Default 2000 MPV Problem

Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Mazda MPV 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 76,000 miles

There is a noise coming from my air cleaner when I ease off the accelerator pedal. The best way to describe the noise is a woof-woof-woof or a rapid pop-pop-popping sound. I know it is affecting my gas mileage. I believe it may be coming from the air system. BUT, I reside in the Philippines and, if you can believe this, the Mazda dealer in Manila does NOT have a vacuum tester that can troubleshoot my vehicle. It does affect my engine performance. The plugs are good and the wires are good. I am at a loss as to where to start. I cannot depend on vehicle mechanics here especially if a major auto dealership in the capital city does not have or know what a vacuum tester is. My vehicle was imported from California and is not a local version.
Thanks for any assistance regarding this matter. Iam afraid my wife may crucify me if we get stuck on the road.I also have O2 sensors not functioning on the catalytic converter but that should not be the problem.
Thanks again
