Tranny issue, '04 Mazda 6.

My automatic transmission seems to be having an issue with hanging on between 1st and 2nd gear. Usually, when it shifts into 2nd, it slams itself into the gear. This only happens after my car has been sitting for a long period of time, and then I go and drive it. It usually takes about 3-4 rotations through 1st-2nd shift changes for it to smooth itself out and transfer those gears normally. Is anyone else having this issue? Or does anyone know what the problem could be? I was thinking maybe it was due to the car being cold at first, but I'd let it warm up before driving (as I do with all of my cars.), but that wasn't the case. It's obviously an internal issue.

Alyssa, There is a TSB for this exact problem that entails reprograming the Trans control module with an updated calibration. It does seem to help quite a bit. The four cyl gets new TCM calibration while the V6 gets new calibrations for TCM and PCM.

Ahh, why thank u! I'll have to take note and give my dealer a call on Monday. Thank God for factory warranties either way!

Mine just started doing the same thing but I think it is from 2nd into 3rd about a week ago. So I assume that it is the same problem? I go monday for a 20k checkup and I will tell them about that too. Thanks ('04 6s)

I have noticed the same as well. What I feel fixes the problem temporarily is to get an oil change. I've observed that when the oil gets to be around 2000 miles broken in, then the car starts to shift roughly. Let me know if any of you others have come across this observation yet. Also, what oils are you all using. I used shat oil to test this and then I used synthetic oil and when i changed to a synthetic oil, the jerking was not as bad.

I haven't noticed it to have anything to do with the oil. Even right after I got my oil changed, it didn't make a difference. 5W30, regular Pennzoil Oil is what I was using. Either way, the car shouldn't be slamming itself into gear like that. I still haven't had time to take the car in to get all the work done.
