when i accelerate just the tiniest bit, i start to hear a ticking noise that is fairly quiet... but it sounds almost like a spoon hitting off of something. i don't know what it is. engine only has 2k miles on it. this noise seems to occur when in the morning when the temperature is cooler, but during the daytime when it is warmer, the sound is gone. what could this be?

 

bring it back to the dealer since you still have the warranty. make sure you tell them the condition the way you posted here. tell them it only occur when the engine is cold so they will check your car during the time of coldness.

 

i had many many small problems with my mazda 6 and i only have 15000 miles in 2 years on this car. the thing i don't like is that i don't even drive hard on this car. [:@]

 

yeah, i dont drive hard. the dealer said they couldnt find a problem since it wasnt making the noise when i went there. has anyone had this problem of ticking noise when starting to press the accelerator? anyone know what this problem could be?

 

Does it sound like its comming from the pistons? If it does, then what octain rating are you useing?

 

i'm pretty sure it is not coming from the pistons, it is something very close to the lower dashboard.... my buddy listened to the engine while i revved the engine a little. the noise is coming from the closest part of the engine to the dashboard. i run the regular gas, nothing more..... would that cause a problem?

 

It might. If it was coming from th pistons it could have been the gas your using. But I dont know about it coming from close to the dashboard. You can give it a shot trying higher octain if you think its coming from the engine. Or maybe its just a part that came loose.

 

Could be the valve train. Also, keep in mind President Bush waved certain restrictions on refining gasoline in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. This allowed oil companies to get gas from the refineries to the gas stations quicker. It could be what you are experiencing. Just a thought.

 

well i guess it was the pistons... i'm running 89 octane instead of the 87 and the noise is virtually gone. Every now and then, it will come back on a cold morning, but other than that it is eliminated. I guess mazda considers this engine pinging to be acceptable for engine noise... thats probably why they dont tell consumers to use 89+ octane gasoline.

 

so we should use 89 octane? I have been using 87, but should we run 89 just to be safe? Can we even run 93 or 94? My car runs fine on 87 though.
