Rebuild, Replace or Turbo
I am new Mazda owner but I am a veteran Auto mechanic with over twenty years in the business. I recently accuired a 2004 Mazda 6 with a blown engine 2.3 L. It was ran low on oil. My friend who owns a shop says he can get my engine rebuilt for $1500 with new rings , rods and mains and a valve job. Or a used motor with 100,000 miles for $1700. My question is should I look for a newer used motor with a turbo ? is there a paticular years that will work in a 2004? Or just pay the $ 1500 and get mine reworked.
I dont have a lot of cash right now.
Thank You

U will need the exhaust manifold and down pipe assy. Along with the intercooler system. The controller can b found aftermarket. Type in cork sport into google. They carry everything including the exhaust pieces intercooler system and controller.
Thanks Racer, Do you know any thing about these Ford Duratec short blocks I see on E @%y
They say fit Mazda , I want to install one in my 2004 6. Then get my smog and then covert to Turbo. They say "This part is compatible with 8 vehicle(s). This part is compatible with 8 vehicle(s) matching undefined.

The duratec motor is essentially what comes in some of the mazdas already they just have slight differences that mazda does to them. Like they use there one emmissions systems on the and also some of the sensors are different. But overall one would be able to work in there.
Just move over everything from the motor that is In your car and the short block will work perfect. But make sure if it has a head and cams already that its the right emissions that is in your car meaning california or federal because the cams are different and your PCM will flip out and the car will not run or will run like crap
Here is my progress so far. I bought the used motor from a wrecking yard. Once the old one was out I started looking at the new one and would you believe it the valves are hitting the pistons. Aparentley they loosened the bottom pulley at the junk yard and the camshaft timing got out of alignment. I dont think there is damage I just need to realign the cams an the crankshaft to TDC. I guess at Mazda they charge a lot for this. Does anyone have a proceedure for this?
Ive read that they make a tool set for the Focus DOHC to set the camshaft timing.
Its really irritating that they dont put marks anywhere.

To align the camshafts you need a plate that fits snugly into the ends of both camshafts and sits flush with the head.
To align the crankshaft you remove the small bung/bolt on the lower rear front corner of the block( stuck behind the RH axle bearing mount) then you need a bolt/tool that looks like the photo below. Screw the bolt in & rotate the crank till it hits the pin. Then line up the small m6 bolt hole in the crank pulley to the M6 threaded hole in the front engine cover, next tighten up the crank bolt ( it should be replaced)
