Default mazda 6disc cd changer.......

I have the option of the 6disc cd changer in my mazda6 and i wanted to switch out head units with a metra face plate. since i'm putting a new head unit in, will i be able to use that 6 disc cd changer still? is that just a plug in to the stock head unit that you can change to an aftermarket head unit? sorry, never done this before. haha

I have not idea, but it's not that hard to get the radio out so you can look at the unit up close. I can walk you through it if you need.

I'll have to check that out whenever I get the time to do so. I'm very curious. Maybe I'll just be lazy and call up the service department at the mazda dealership and ask them if it can be used with an aftermarket head unit.

Not likely that you will be able to reuse the changer. The system is modular and is very interchangeable but only within itself. You can get a single or six disc in the top and a cassette or minidisc in the bottom. Your 6 disc module plugs right into the top of the main audio unit.
Here a some pics of the system. First pic is the cd module by itself. 2nd is cd module separated from base unit, 3rd is connectors that link the cd moduel to base unit. 4th is audio unit as seen from backside of console, 5th is the hole you leave in dash to remove the bugger.

alright, thanks. I'm looking into a new head unit, most likely an alpine being that they have amazing sound quality and have enough power from their built in amplifier to power up all of the door speakers to an adequate amount. Now the problem is to find a head unit that is not going to clash in color from all of the red lighted buttons. As of right now, not any options for a head unit that has red lights. maybe some upcoming models will be different.
