How to change fuel filter on 2009?
Really? I'm surprised as I don't remember my 2009 Mazda3 recommending a fuel filter replacement at all.
A little of both. The car has 167K on it and is still running the original filter. It runs fine for the most part, but has a little bit of hesitation and idles a bit rough.
Spark plug age? Start there if they are over 70k and throw a throttle body cleaning on top of it. Check your PCV hose on the back of the intake and make sure it's not starting to collapse. You may even want to take the IAC, Idle Air Control valve out and clean those passages.

Yes, i GT - 4 cylinder.
On a 2009 it's located underneath, just in front of the RR wheel arch, and is changed every 40,000kms. ( In my part of the world)
I no longer have the car so I'm not 100% sure; that said, various maintenance events is something I typically look up when I first buy a car, and I am reasonably certain I never saw any reference to a fuel filter replacement.
