Battery dead on return from vacation

My 18 month old Mazda's battery was totally dead on my return from holiday. Mazda dealership say this is to be expected when the car hasn't be used for 4 weeks. Was advised to take off earth lead and attach trickle charger. Also told that the battery would not start to take charge for the first 6 hours. I left it on for 28 hours and things now seem back to normal. Anyone with the same experience? Just as well the car was at home as I would have been very annoyed if I'd used it to the airport.
If this is the norm then is there anyway to stop the total discharge? Sure I could remove the earth connection but then the alarm would be knocked out. Would a small solar panel generate enough of a charge?

Thanks for the replies. From what I can see there are no lights remaining on. Seems to be simply a matter of too much going on in the electrical system whilst the car us unused. Thinking now of fitting a battery brain but need to check if the car's immobilzer will be a problem.
