Default 2020 Mazda6 Turbo Oil Change Interval

In my maintenance manual, it states 7500 miles for the oil change interval, but my info screen indicated a oil change needed at 5k and I also got a call from the dealership saying to schedule my first oil change. Am I missing something? Why would they try to say 5k miles when the manual clearly states 7500? Other than the obvious $$$

The 5k is for heavy duty use, which stop and go city traffic is considered. Having been to DC lots, even the beltway is always stop and go. Also, the interval includes time, so it just may be that you’ve had the car 6 months.
My 6 had the reminders set to 5k miles, I changed it to “flexible” after the first oil change.

Ah yea I suppose it has been 6 months....that must be it. Normally you're right about heavy traffic but with covid my commute has been smooth sailing.

Are you guys still stuck at 6mth services? We've been running 12mth services for about 3 or 4 yrs.

Not that big a deal to change the oil. Once it’s out of warranty, yeah, it’s strictly by mileage. For now, I don’t want to give them one additional excuse to claim “didn’t follow maintenance schedule” and deny any engine related stuff that may come up.

At the end of the day, what matters is what the owners manual says and not the dealer. Of course in our region (Canada), it says every 8K km or 6 months (due to extreme climate - heat/cold). I only put in 800Kms a month on average so doesn’t get to 8K km in 6 months so I just follow the every 6mos oil change.

Can’t hurt to do extra oil changes. I do it at about 6,000 miles 12 months.

pre-pandemic that was every 2 months. Now it is looking like 12 months with less than 5,000 miles. Full synthetic every time.

This is a pretty well is a good recommendation. The MYTH surrounding Turbo Charged engine that you need to change it more frequently then a NA=normally aspirated engine is really just that a MYTH and this is not "exactly" accurate. Most average driver seldom get into high boost levels . That means that you are NA even with a Turbo Charged engine most of the time, at least with the consumer that buys a Turbo Charged engine for a Dailey driver. There are always the very few that are an exception to the rule..... and unfortunately those are more of what starts MYTHs about Turbo Charged engines on forums and the internet .The turbo Charger will increase the oil temperatures under medium to high boost levels and really as long as you allow for some off boosted driving so the oil will circulate normally and cool to the expected operating temperatures you should in most cases not harm the Turbo Charger bearing or cause high levels of burned oil deposits . If you have a Dailey driver gasoline power Turbo Charged engine it should go exactly the same life designed miles as a NA engine if cared for with both scheduled and preventative maintenance .

This is not an opinion from me by any means as I build racing Turbo chargers and run a couple on vehicles of my own both for track and Dailey drivers. I even own a 12 second Turbo Charged PT Cruiser.... lol
What I have found is that if you do not keep control of the sumps oil temperatures and do a run down after high boosting the oil will flash or burn and this is what causes the majority of Turbo Charger to fail.

Reviving this because I finally had my first oil change just before 7500 from a Mazda dealer because they offered a free first oil change. They used conventional 5W-30 rather than synthetic, which I was surprised by, but I asked because I was skeptical that they are were just using that because its cheaper and it was the free oil change but someone there told me Mazda recommends conventional for the turbo engine variants. Even in the manual it does not specify the type of oil other than 5W-30. Makes no statement of conventional vs synthetic. Were they just being cheap or is that actually the Mazda recommended oil type?
