Default 2007 Mazda 6 1.8 S Engine trouble

Hi guys, new member here! o/ I have a couple of questions, but let me give you the background to my problem first...

I bought a used 2007 Mazda 6 1.8 S back in August, and for the most part had been really impressed with the car, but after a couple of months' driving I noticed a repetitive problem where the oil light would come on after the engine had warmed up.

Having checked that the oil level was fine, and as I had no other symptoms and no other engine warning lights I assumed this was a faulty sensor and (questionably I know) continued to drive the car as normal, until boxing day, when driving on the motorway I noticed a rattling noise from the engine bay, and after deciding to drive slowly to the nearest services heard a clunk, and the car ground to a halt.

I had to have the car recovered and the chap who picked us up advised there was no oil in the engine. I had checked the oil the day before as I knew I was going on a long journey, and when driving that day did not notice any smoke, or any different smells coming from the car, and there was no oil under the car which we could see... it had also not lost a drop of oil since buying the car 5 months previously so how there was no oil is a mystery.

The car now starts but does not drive, and it chugs and cuts out if you release the clutch (although It crawled into the garage forecourt). My garage took one listen to the engine and advised the entire thing needs replacing, advising against stripping it down for diagnostic purposes as this will be additional cost to myself only to find out a new engine is required anyway.

I have several questions!

Firstly, has anyone had any experience of the above problem, or know of a possible cause?

Do you think it might be worth paying £200 ($300) to have the engine stripped and inspected, to see if it could be fixed? I have been quoted £800 ($1200) for a replacement engine plus fitting.

I am really struggling to find a replacement engine for the car. I have been advised that the 2002-2008 L8 engine will NOT fit as my 2007 Mark 1 is a facelift version and uses a different engine (the noticeable defining feature being the dipstick placement, which is in the centre of the engine cover rather than at the front). Can anyone with knowledge of the Mazda 6 and its' history confirm if the older engines will fit or if they are indeed completely different? I believe there is no difference to the chassis but I'm not an expert.

If the older engines won't fit, will the engines from the newer Mark 2 ('07 onwards) fit? I have seen some pictures where the engine on the newer cars actually looks identical to mine.

Lastly, if I can't find a 1.8 engine would it be OK to drop a 2.0 or even a 2.3 engine into it, or will this cause gearbox problems?

Sorry for the long post but hope this gives you all the background, I hope someone can help, currently in a bit of a fix and finding it really hard to get good reliable information from anywhere!

Thanks guys
