2006 Mazda 6 A/C not working
 

Hi, I have had excellent reliability with my 6! I have 185,000 miles on it now (4 cylinder engine) without any major issues. Now it has a problem with the A/C not blowing any cold air..just warm. At idle when I turn on the A/C. I hear the compressor kick in, but no cold air, just warm. Anyone have any suggestions/ideas I can start with before I get it to a mechanic? Does the freon (whatever they call it now) need to be added/changed? Guessing that's a mechanics job.

If there is not enough refrigerant in the system the compressor will shut off in an act of self preservation.
In my opinion it would be best to consult an mechanic. If you plan on having the car for a few more years it may be worth while to have the refrigerant sucked out, then a vacuum applied for some significant time (1 hour or so) and refilled with fresh refrigerant.
That extended application of vacuum will remove moisture from the system. Moisture will interrupt the circulation. That's why there is a dryer/receiver in the system.

it may not have anything to do with the level of freon in the system. look at this:

this is the actuator that controls the heater/ac blende door. this door moves, and mixes heat and cold depending on what temp is selected. since the actuator is electric, it is controlled by an amplifier. the amplifier interpolates the signals from the heater/ac controls, and tells the actuator how far to open the blende door. there are other actuators that control air flow to defrost, dash, footwell, etc. the temp blende door actuator is used way more times than any other, so it will fail sooner. i dont have a lot of experience with the mazda 6, but most later cars have automatic hvac(climate control), and this system mixes heat and a/c to give you the temp that has been selected, by use of blende doors.

UPDATE: Took it in and happy to report that it just needed a charge of refrigerant!! This baby blows very cold air and is much appreciated here in hot in the summer, N. California. Also had the coolant changed and a fresh oil change. This car continues to amaze me with 190,000 miles with darn little work done..just some servicing and a set of struts. Happy camper here. And a shout out to tanprotege for nailing it correctly!

Nice! I suppose there is a small leak somewhere. If the AC gets weak over this summer you may want them to check for the leak.

Update on my 2006 Mazda 6: it's been a excellent car and now has 218,000 miles and still runs/drives like a champ! Had mechanic add more a/c refrigerant last week and she's kicking out cold air! Next update at the 250,000-275,000 mark!

Drain and re pressurize with AC .. make sure its not over filled , these AC are very sensitive...less is always better than more . always use a gauge to see pressure amonut as well.

My mechanic found the problem..leaky a/c hose. The Mazda is back in action! It's the most impressive car I have ever owned and I'm in my 60's. Thanks Pinstat for the heads up on the a/c fill level. And a shout out to the very knowledgeable people here.
