1st Time owner/1st Time poster needing help w/brakes
 

Howdy all! I'm hoping I can get some help. I'm trying to replace the front rotors and pads on my wifes 06 M6 but those stupid screws on the rotors are giving me fits.[:@] Any suggestions/hints/tips for removing those screws? I'm to the point I'm ready to drill them out and not replace them since no other car I've owned has had screws holding the rotors on.

My fiance says that you either need an impact driver or to try and tap with a hammer over the screws not really hard but enough that will hopefully loosen the grip of the screws. Hope this helps!:D

She's correct!!
The best thing to use is an impact driver. Chances are the threads are though and a little rusted on the backside of the rotor.
If you do not own an impact driver (the mechanical type, not air powered) you might try a std Phillips head screwdriver. Soak the as much of the screw as you can get at in lubricating oil... like WD-40. Put pressure on the head of the screw in a counter-clockwise motion while tapping the back handle of the screwdriverwith a hammer, but use light taps. The idea is to break the hold pressure and rust have on it. Once loose, they will come out freely, I'm sure.It could take a little while using this method, so be patient.
Be sure to use some anti-seize on the screws threads when replacing them.

Kroil penetrant, and an impact driver with a sledge hammer is how I did it.

I couldn't get them to budge with anything else.

The screws are there to hold the rotors in place during vehicle assembly.

Yup. They can be a bung-hole all right.
If worse comes to worse, drill 'em out at the head, but your fiancé may hearsome rattling/chattering from the rotors if you don't replace them, especially at low speeds.

I ultimately went to Harbor Freight and bought an impact driver. Though I busted both Phillips bits, it worked well enough I was able to get the screws out and the rotors and pads replaced.

Good man, Reggie. I too was going to suggest an impact driver. What a great tool, they are.
