soft brake pedal

I just got a 2006 mazda5 from a friend. Noticed right away with engine vibration at idle and also a soft brake pedal that traveled far before slowing the vehicle. He said a shop professionally bled the brakes and yet it still does that. I also tried bleeding the brakes but didn't help.

So today I put in a new engine mount and new master cylinder. Cured the engine vibrations at idle, but brake pedal is the same. I did bench bleed some and bled from all 4 calipers. Bled it for along time actually and basically have all new fluid in the system.

Anyways, just wondering if anyone in this forum has had similar issues and how it was resolved?

This turned out to be a bad ABS module. Got a used one from a junkyard for $75 to fix it.

Yeah, big thing on the 5's and 3's. I'm an auto tech and just did an 07 3 with a bad modulator, $990 later for the part and labor and its as good as new.

Ouch. Glad I didn't take it to a shop. Curious how you guys diagnose a bad ABS (for the soft pedal issue) without guessing? I was going to buy plugs and test that way but no hardware store had the thread size.
