Default The power steering pump is bad

Bring it back to the dealer for replacement if yours still under warranty. It happened the same with my 08 when I went with RX-8 wheels, and the next day the dealler replaced that for me for free. It is gonna cost you a little above 1 grand for the job, if you don't have warranty.

Default Power Steering Problems

My 08 5 was driving great, no problems (approx 19k). Parked for about 15 minutes with the car running while waiting for school to let out...I put the car in reverse and couldn't turn the wheel. The ps warning light was also on. After turning it off and letting it sit and starting it several times it worked long enough to get it to the dealership. Had to have the pump replaced. Thank goodness it was still under warranty.

Another 08 5 had come in a couple of hours before me with the same problem. I've been without my car for a week (driving a loaner) and when I called to find out when it would be ready they told me that the part was on national back order. Hmmm???

There were no changes to my wheels other than a tire replacement (with the exact same type of tire). So I have to wonder if the issues you both had were coincidental and had nothing to do with the wheels. This might be a more common problem than I originally thought.

Default Power Steering

I got my car back after 8 days. Now there is an alignment problem, but it may be bad tread on the new tire. Anyway...the dealership swears that they are not a aware of a major problem with the PS pumps, but I am hearing more and more about it. I hope you get your car back soon!

I still love my car! Just makes me nervous about future problems...

I had a similar problem. After the car was idling for about 10 minutes, I went to pull away and the power steering was dead, and dash light on. I shut the car off, and back on right away and the problem was solved. Never happened before, or since. Should I take it to the dealer or not worry about it?

Go to the virgin 1 sticky in the general tech forum, and carefully read my item entitled Premature Power Steering System Failues in Late Model Mazdas.
and read it carefully.
I've been doing some work on this one and have more data which, when complete, I'll use to update the sticky.
A few things you should know:
1. Mazda has issued a TSB to its agents on this one; it includes provisions and conditions for courtesy transportation in the event of a lengthy delay in getting parts.
The delay encountered by some owners has been weeks, sometimes as much as 6 weeks, due to part shortages.
2. Mazda is not alone in having problems with electro-hydraulic power steering system failures; practically every maker in North America and Europe using EHPS or EHPAS has been affected.
3. In North America and the UK, the respective highway transportation safety agencies do not want to declare this to be a safety issue, because if you take the vehicle in and it has cleared itself, the car will be released as OK (it will recur tough).
4. If the repairer CAN replicate the fault, and it had been categorically declared a safety issue by a transportation agency, in most if not all jurisdictions the law then prohibits the releasing of a vehicle to a client if it is in an unsafe condition.
5. The repair costs can be from $800- $1000 for pump only, to $2000 or so if damage has occurred to other steering system components as well.

Wow, impressive information, oldeng. Thanks for getting that together! I had a feeling it was a bigger problem than anyone was admitting.

BCNorth - I don't know how true this is, but the dealership I went to said that they could not get the problem to replicate, but ran a computer test on it and found a specific failure code. They told me they had no way of knowing if or when it would happened again, but that they could prove an original failure because of that code which allowed them to repair it under warranty.

It may be worth having them run a test to see if they could find the same thing, especially if you are still under warranty.

I have not had any problems since having it fixed.

Good Luck!

If you read the sticky about power steering in the general tech forum, you'll see there are things you can do to help avoid recurrence.
The killer is the fluid and the compact pump. When the pump operates at full demand, it hauls around 60- 70 Amps. off the 12 V supply, i.e. 720- 840 watts; most of it goes as heat, transferred to the fluid immediately, so now you have a mini-electric coffee pot trying to boil the ATF M 111 / Dexron 111 hydraulic fluid, which is rated to 200 Deg. C absolute max. and where even there it rapidly deteriorates, destroying its inhibiting and lubricating properties, and soon becoming aggressively hostile to pretty much everything in the steering system. So if you load the steering while stopped or at low speed, the fluid circulation is nearly nil and it can't escape to cool down.
The reservoir smell test and aspirate and purge procedure I described is not perfect, but it sure as hell beats having a steering system seize up a a crucial moment.
I have a sneaking suspicion of what's going on and it's an avalanche of a series of interdependent events verging on the diabolical, so it's just a hypothesis I'm keeping to myself for now until sniffing the evidence trail along the ground leads me to a tree I can pee against, so to speak.
Meanwhile, unless the seizure cooks out the electrics, it is somewhat recoverable but does require immediate attention to that fluid.
Hey, it's a nuisance I know, but there's worse stuff you could sniff.
