Going off the recommendation in the service manual is not advised. However there on no service manual EVER written to cover all possible scenarios.
.
If a situation happens and it becomes necessary to lift out side the normal and safe service instructions then make sure you use common sense and personal safety first. That said try to spread the lifting load over a greater surface area . A couple of same length 2x4 works well but remover your are lifting several hundred lbs so have the jack stands in the proper location to quickly support your lifted vehicle .
My manual only shows pinch-weld-lift points for tire changes. Older manuals were more helpful. Mazdas lawyers don't want us taking a peak under the skirt.
Can someone please confirm or deny those potential lift points, for me? Is the metal that I circled strong enough?

BLink twice for YES, once for NO.
Thats funny dude!
No one really should or wants to confirm you can lift it there.
On my own personally owned and service vehicles at times being a situation that I could not use the area design to lift an area of a vehicle have used what I common sense could structurally hold slowly lifting and then using jack stands or ramps in place of the floor jack area's much like some even pictured in this thread. I am also having an Aircraft Structural Analysis and Modification Certification so tend to figure these things out perhaps better then some.
