2014 Mazda 5 engine timing.

Hey everyone. I'm trying to help a friend with his 2014 Mazda 5. I am almost done rebuilding the 2.5 engine, but can't set timing because there are no timing marks. I am stuck and need some help. Alldata sucks on this so idk what to do. Anyone know where the timing marks are and the cam positions? Thanks again.

Is the engine the old L5 engine or the newer skyactiv PY engine?

It's the 2.5 dohc in the 2014 Mazda 5.non turbo.

grim_reaper 07-08-2019 07:52 AM

2.5 LF engine or 2.5 PY engine??????

situation519 07-08-2019 08:01 AM

What do you mean? It's a 2.5 duel overhead cam engine. 4 cylinder

situation519 07-08-2019 08:02 AM

The engine does say Ford and not Mazda on the engine. It is non turbo too

Look at the engine and write down the engine number thats stamped into the block. This will tell you what the engine is.

situation519 07-10-2019 08:09 AM

Okay. Will do. I'm going to his home now

I guess it's the L5 engine.

So grim reaper, what would be the correct cam gear position and cam position for top dead center? The engine has been rebuilt, but I have not set timing yet as I can't find any info on it.

grim_reaper 07-13-2019 01:21 AM

You need a set of alignment tools.

situation519 07-13-2019 08:55 AM

Thanks man. Unfortunately, I already have all that in the alldata diy page.
I need the cam gear positioning and the proper can position as well. I can find anything on timing marks. So I don't even know where the cam gears are supposed to be.

situation519 07-13-2019 08:57 AM

My problem has been there is no reference point like a crank pulley key or anything

situation519 07-15-2019 04:19 PM

Is there anyone else who knows? I'm worried I'm not going to be able to help my friend out and can't get any answers on cam gear positioning

grim_reaper 07-16-2019 03:10 AM

You align the crank shaft using the pin, and align the camshafts using the plate. I'm not sure what more info you want or need?

situation519 07-16-2019 10:41 AM

I needed correct cam gear positioning because I had to remove them. I also needed proper can positioning, such as where the lobes on the cams should be pointing. I had to rebuild the whole engine and not just replace the timing chain, so the marks I made got washed off. Sorry man. Not trying to sound unappreciative, I am very thankful, but that's where I have been stuck

situation519 07-17-2019 03:07 PM

Or maybe I should reword it. The proper vvt position of the intake cam gear and the exhaust cam gear. Eh, well, I tried to help my friend. Thanks for the help grim reaper. I appreciate it but I don't want to annoy you or the rest of the forum. I am stumped and I don't want to ruin my friends engine, so sadly, I am going to have to throw in the towel.

grim_reaper 07-17-2019 03:49 PM

The alignment plate that slots into the end of the camshafts can only fit 1 way ie the cams will be pre set at TDC apon fittment.

Obviously you wouldn't fit the camshafts until you're locked the crankshaft using the pin first. This sets the crank & #1 piston at TDC.

I will try & find a diagram for cam pulleys.

situation519 07-17-2019 05:00 PM

So does this look right?

Workshop manual doesn't mention cam gear alignment. I thought they had alignment pins?

situation519 07-17-2019 11:06 PM

Nope. No alignment pins nor a crank pulley key. See what I've been struggling with now? The alldata diy program has all the same pictures as the workshop manual.

situation519 07-18-2019 06:45 PM

Does it look like the cams are in the correct position before timing is set again

grim_reaper 07-20-2019 08:10 AM

From what I can read in regards to replacing the VVT sprocket on the intake cam, it makes no difference once you use the alignment plate.

situation519 07-20-2019 06:02 PM

So the cam gears look correct in the picture? I just thought the vvt gear had to have a specific position, but I guess I'll chance it. Thank you friend.

situation519 07-21-2019 12:26 PM

I also wanted to know if the cams looked like they were in the correct position.

situation519 07-24-2019 10:25 PM

Um, so how does it look?

grim_reaper 07-25-2019 05:09 AM

As far as I'm aware, if you use the alignment plate then its all fine & dandy.

situation519 07-26-2019 08:40 PM

So I got it finally. I decided to use some nail polish I borrowed from my friends wife to make some timing marks on the cam gears, as well as the harmonic balancer pulley. I got the Ford/Mazda timing tool from AutoZone, put the plate in the cam slots, used a longer bolt than came in the kit for the crank stop, and torqued everything down. Made 2 full revolutions to set the timing after and all the marks lined up exactly where they were supposed to. Thanks for helping Grim reaper. I think I speak for many of us when I say I'd love to throat punch the engineer who designed this motor with no alignment pins for the cams or the crank pulley or timing marks, lol.
