2007 Madza5 Van
The Madza5 vans have a issue that Madza will not tell any one. In 2007 the production on the van was stoped to replace the oil cooler because it had a plastic O ring in the cooler. They replaced this cooler with a new oil cooler that had rubber O ring. there was about 700 of these vans made with the plastic O ring in the cooler. Hell they did not tell the Madza Dealers or there Tecs about this change. You can't even get a part for the old oil cooler. If your cooler starts to leake, you half to buy the new cooler ( the complet housing)at a cost of arounf $435.00 + the labor the dealer will charge you to put it in. cost you about $700.00 to $900.00. Now Madza is not telling any of the people who bought the first 700 Vans. I guess they are thinking the Vans will be out of warranty be for they half to fix them. All this over a part that costs about $3.00. Any one have this issue with the Madza5 vans from 2007.
I just went through this mess. 2007 Mazda 5 with 107,500 miles and 6 months out of warranty.
The seal between the oil cooler and the filter housing began to leak, bad. I pulled it all apart and expected to go down and pay $5.00 for a new seal but was told I need to buy the whole new cooler for $435.
I had no choice but to buy one. I wonder if the seal on this one is replaceable?. Fortunately I was able to install it myself and save the labor costs.
My advice: if you have a Mazda 5 with one of these old style installed and it is still under warranty, put a wrench on the nut that holds the cooler to the filter adapter and loosen it just enough so it leaks. Take it back to the dealer and make them fix it with the new cooler. Otherwise you will eventually have to do it yourself and pay for it.
In the attached photo you can see the new one on the left, the old one in the middle and the old seal on the right. The new one is easy to identify as it is a silver color and the old one is black.

I bought my 2007 Mazda 5 about two years ago with 20k miles. I was attracted to the looks, seating configuration and good gas mileage. I heard some bad press, but I had no idea what I was getting in to. First thing I had to do was replace the tires. They were very loud. Two months later I was hearing the same noise. The tire dealer said the the tires were cupped and basically ruined.
new tires, new rims, alignment.
Now at 60k here are the issues I am having.
struts are banging, engine light is on. replaced the O2 sensor, gas cap and still showing a "evap"? leak. WIll not go into gear, without using the override button. Tires are wearing incorrectly again. Also the gas mileage has never been better than 23mpg. I have carefully logged it so I know this is correct. Loaded down it is more like 20 or worse.
I could spend another couple thousand on this hunk but I refuse. If you are even considering buying one of these, I recommend you invest in shares of the Brooklyn Bridge. This will be more rewarding. Mazda has forever lost a loyal customer.
Anyone want to buy one? It looks nice.

I have 85k mi on my '07, oil cooler leaking, some suspension noise, but nothing broken. It is wearing the tires to where they make noise I have to get an alignment check to see where I have to fix problems. Only parts they make are for rear camber. I also had to replace the thermostat but I expect that living in phoenix. I like the car but Mazda didn't build some things right on it.
I also have a 2007 Mazda 5 with 82K miles and recently found the driver's side strut is leaking. So I have set arriving later today that I will install. By the end of this week, I will have front/rear sway bar bushings arrive to replace the noisy ones on my car. So far, I have only had to replace the thermostat and clean the injectors on my car when the check engine light went on recently. It is now just starting the suspension noise issues. Been fortunate that my car doesn't eat tires. Lasts about 30K miles before a new set. I saved that for my 2000 Saab 9-5 Aero Wagon which I just recently sold. It ate tires at a rate of 10-12K miles.
Suspension is a common problem on these - just dont buy Mazda part use aftermarket ones as they tend to be far superior and solve the problems. Keep going to Mazda and you will pay over the odds and it will wear out quicker
Just installed the new KYB struts into the Mazda. What a huge difference! I knew one of my struts was leaking but when I checked the passenger side strut, it wasn't working at all. I could move the shaft like an accordion. Zero rebound with the strut. Just came back from driving the Mazda after the wheel alignment. It is just like new again. Will be replacing the front/rear sway bar bushings this weekend. Hopefully, that will get rid of the last of the suspension noise. Gotta love that lifetime warranty from KYB. Probably will replace the rear shocks with KYBs soon.
