'08 Mazda 5 Sport Nav manual gearshift / power & economy

Hi all,
We are proud new owners of a lovely UK Stormy Blue 2008 Mazda 5 with 44000 miles, 2.0 Diesel with nav, xenons, electric doors, leather etc.
The car is great but i have a few queries.

The gearshift seems really notchy, its almost impossible to get a clean 1st to 2nd change and so on......now I am used to crap gear shifts (I drive a Renault Clio FFS) but I did expect better from this car. My mum has a Mazda 2 Tamura and the gearshift is excellent, as is the Mazda MX5 etc. Are there bushings or anything like that that can wear and need replaced?

Economy wise, this car is only averaging out at about 34mpg......which is utterly pathetic imo for a 2.0 diesel. As far as I recall, this car should be rocking out an AVERAGE of 43.....no chance.

Finally, not so sure on the power the car is producing. I appreciate that 6th gear is usually an overdrive gear to be used when up to speed, but 5th doesnt even produce acceptable overtaking power at motorway speeds. There are no CEL codes shown on the dash at all.....I have also not noted any of the traits of the DPF regen issues, though I may be wrong.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.
Regards
Andy

Diesel experience

Hi,
I have a 2008(58) Mazda 5 2.0D Sport with 41000miles on the clock so it should be comparable with yours.

Gearshift - I have not had the same problems you describe. While not as smooth as my old 626 the only issue I have is sometimes trying to get into 1st while on the move e.g. following slow moving traffic up a hill. If your problem is with all ratios could it be a clutch issue?

Fuel economy - I typically get 41mpg on mainly journeys of 8 and 45miles on single carriageways. I hardly ever use 6th except on motorways. The best I have had is about 47.5mpg for a 250miles trip including 100miles of motorway. I reset my computer every fill up and find it to be within 1-2mpg compared with "longhand" calculations.

Power - once above 1500rpm I find I have plenty of power. In 5th the car will accelerate fine from around 50mph.

Suggestion - if you have the previous owners details from the registration certificate you may be able to get his phone number and ask him for his experience.

Hope this helps.

I made a long reply a couple of days ago them promptly closed my browser without posting and didn't have time to rewrite it.

My experiences are similar to Rhodri. 2008 Sport Nav 2.0D with Luxury pack 48000 miles. Plenty of power in 5th, 6th for motorway cruising. Worst about 37mpg, Average 42, Best 60+ (died of boredom). All done by measuring, display reads slightly lower.

Gears are a little notchy when cold but no problems when warm.

I'd suggest changing the gear oil to a Synthetic type, which might help. Or as Rhodri says it could be the clutch binding. Does it crunch going into reverse?

Right, so after a few months of ownership I have to report our average is sitting at 31mpg.

Thats pretty poor in my opinion no?

Definitely something wrong there, unless all your driving is short journeys in town.
