Trunk size: Mazda 3 vs CX3

Do any of you have any experience with the "real life" trunk size of the Mazda 3 and the CX-3?

When looking at the numbers they are exactly the same. But when I look at pictures the trunk of the 3 appears to be larger than the one of the CX-3.

Which generation and version of the Mazda3? The 4-Door Sedan or the 5-Door Hatch?

The current generation 5-door hatchback.

Per the numbers reported by Edmonds, the Mazda CX-3 has about 12 cubic feet of storage in back with the seats up and 44 cubic feet with the rear seat folded, meanwhile the 5-Door version of the Mazda3 has more like 20 cubic feet with the rear seat up and 47 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.

Looks like you are correct, the Mazda3 is the cargo space winner between these two cars.

Wow - the difference is huge. Mazda saying it's 1:1, when actually it's almost 2:1.

Thank you for the answer!

Edit: This can't be right, can it? I mean the difference is just too big...

Given how the "seat-down" measurements are pretty close, it seems there is significant difference in how cargo can be stored with the seat up. I've never seen the inside of a CX-3 so I can only speculate; maybe there is an issue with how the "seat-up" configuration precludes cargo being stacked from the floor to the ceiling.

CX-3 boot, with seats up is tiny, the two stage/fake floor doesn't help either.

I looked at both the Mazda3 and the CX-3 at the NY International Auto Show in April. The cargo area of the CX-3 is very small with the seats up (Kind of like my ex's Toyota Prius C). That's why I went with the Mazda3.
