Timing chain question
 

Sorry if this has been posted recently, but I didn't see it in any recent messages.

I have a 2005 Mazda 3 sedan. What are the guidelines for replacing the timing chain on the car? I have been receiving conflicting advice from auto techs and I want to know the "real" answer to the question.

Idon't know if there's a definitive answer from Mazda, or anyone to that question, as in, "@ 100,000 miles, replace the timing chain and guides."
I'm sure it'll make it's presence known when it's time to though. They usually start making some noise, slapping, etc... Unlike timing belts though, I've never heard of a timing chain that gave out w/o any warning. I'm glad these cars don't have belts. I'm sick of worrying about those things in an interference engine.

According the salesperson from whom I bought my M3, the 2006 and previous M3's with the 2.0 had timing belts, and the 2007 and later 2.0's have timing chains.

If you have the 2.3 engine, I have no idea.

Ifyou havea chain, I don't know why you'd ever replace it, unlessyou were experiencinga problem.

Yep, the chain is supposedly to last the lifetime of the car, so we don't have to worry about it.

I don't know if that salesman was correct in saying 2006 and earlier had timing belts. I checked my owners manual and their is no reference to timing belts nor a schedule for changing them.

Nope.Wrong.All the newer engines, from at least 2004 use chains.A MUCH better system.
