Steering Wheel trim

What ho one and all,

Want to either spray of apply a matt black ppf to the steering wheel silver trim, as arrowed in the photo. Since the rest of the wheel is balck, why did Mazda decide to make this silver?
However, is there a secret to removal? I assume it just unclips with some trim removal tools?
Thanks

You will need to cover it on the wheel. While there is NO service guide for what you want to do, I have removed a couple of Mazda wheel, and it is not clipped and you are likely to break it if you force remove it. I had mine 3M vinyl wrapped but removed it when my leather treatment lifted the edge and made it look unsightly. Sorry no pictures. I actually purchased a Cork Sport wheel to replace the OEM but have not got around to changing it yet.
I believe but can't remember and didn't look but you can also get aftermarket covers for that area of the wheel as well?? I think a few years ago I got one and never installed it?
The reasoning behind the silver is visual reference to steering wheel positioning. Or maybe it was some designer's idea of what was thought to look good or sporty? lol
I am surprised you are not more concerned with the center air bag if it were to blow the emblem could hit you in the face.

Good point about the centre logo but I will assume that it will stay on the plastic as the bag expands.

I do wonder about wrapping it in situ but that could be challenging. Would be easy to mask and spray but don't really want the vapour inside.

I do think the Mazda designers went a bit over the top. There are silver 'frames' around the ventilation that points at the side windows. In the right light, the silver reflects on the glass and slightly obscures the view in the mirror. I have removed them, sprayed matt black and it has killed the reflection.

The steering wheel trim is not a reflection problem, it just annoys me that it does not match the darker tones.

The steering wheel emblem can be detached during the air bag deployment. I like my face😂.. so I removed it.

that area would require a little talent and experience to do a good job…
Masking to protect everything in that area would talks about an hour lol..
the vapor smell would likely only be light and last maybe a day.

I used inexpensive covers on the vents that I will be hydrocoating to match my pillars. Didn’t like the silver either . In the near future everything silver and the piano door cover will all be hydrocoated.

Thanks for the link, interesting. Will have a look from here in the UK.

Also plan to de-silver the surrounding to the central vent and gear lever. If I can remove, spray matt black will be fine.

Have seen the term 'hydrocoating' used, what is hydrocoating? Hydro implies water but that cannot be right!

I covered it with masking tape to make a pattern, then transferred that to some matt black protection film. It does look so much better now; however, I'm not 100% happy so will do it a second time, leaving a few millimeters to fold under so that I don't have a free edge.

Post up pictures when you are done.:D

Low tech.... tech tip. with a figure nail file sharpen the underside of a figure and thumb nail. Then wash with lots of soap and water just like a surgeon. Then cut your material pattern as you stated slightly larger the using your human blade that is your newly sharpen figure nail you can actually cut the material just like a razor. But even better than a blade or razor because it wouldn't damage the part you are applying the material to.
Just remember when you are finished before you pick your nose trim the nail or your going to bleed. LOL

In the past, I have found that duck taping a scalpel blade to my finger works pretty well!
