Check for information on the NHTSCA site: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/

If there is a recall campaign in effect, it's mandatory for the manufacturer to notify the vehicle owners. My Mazda had a few recall campaigns in its first year of production and I've always received notification via snail mail for each one that applied to my vehicle's production number. During routine maintenance, I was also notified on-site by my Mazda service adviser of a recall repair they were going to perform, which was thoroughly explained to me. I wouldn't say that Mazda is getting sneaky, as it's not in their best interest to allow necessary repairs (especially if safety-related) to go unperformed. I would also think that the manufacturer would be held liable for additional repairs that may result from an unaddressed design/manufacturing flaw if a recall notice is not sent out. In addition, shouldering the cost associated with a recall campaign is a relatively inexpensive alternative to a potential class action lawsuit. I don't know if you're the original owner of your vehicle, but sometimes when a car is sold, delays in updating owner databases causes the original owners to receive the recall notice (some may not be considerate enough to forward the notice or notify the manufacturer of ownership change as indicated on the notices). Either way, recalls are a pain, but on the bright side... they're performed free of charge.

Nope. Neither have I. Course, snail mail takes forever.
