Default Radio and Interior Lights Turn Off While Driving?

Hello,

I've searched the archives, and I can't find any info about this problem. This is for my friend's car, a 2005 Mazda 3.

While driving once, his audio system turned off and then turned back on 2 seconds later. The interior lights also did the same thing. This happened several times. At first we thought it was a blown fuse but after checking the fuses that were labeled audio, neither of them were blown. A few times he pushed the fuse in and wiggled it around a little and that did the trick just fine, but now that doesnt work. Fuses were checked again and they are not blown.

Also, at the same time, the keyless entry remote does not work.

Does he just need to buy new fuses? We want to avoid going to the dealership for this problem since they hardly ever help anyways.

Thanks.

- Joe

Hey Joe!! (No pun intended....)
This is a new one for me too. It might be the ECU/PCM needs reprogramming, or it might be a loose wire somewhere. Hard to say. No where to start from.
If it is computer related though, you might try resetting it by disconnecting the battery terminals for 10-15 mins, or even touching them together for +30 secs once disconnected. Then reconnect and see if the problem reoccurs.

I ran into a simular problem, room fuse would blow intermittenly, can be a few things, First Power junction box (fuse box), audio unit, heater unit, keyless entry module, cluster or wiring harness.... this is if the room fuse keeps blowing, my ended being a bad wire in harness...

Unplug the battery OK. Is there a code for the radio for when you unplug it? (like my Audi)

I think the problems are related though because the radio and remote either work at the same time, or they don't. And when he pushes this fuse (can't remember which one he said, but I'll find out - I know it's under the hood, not under the glovebox), both the radio and remote work. It's never one or the other.

If the ECU needs to be reset, this is going to have to be a dealership thing, huh? Damn.

Thanks for the help, guys.

No new radio code needed. It will work once the battery is reconnected.
Also, doing what I suggested does reset the ECU. It will take approx 100 miles to relearn.

Ahhh OK. What happens during that 100 miles that it relearns? Does the car run weird or something?

I think we'll try this, but I just want to be really sure of what I'm doing.

No real problem there either. You may experience a few unusual things, but nothing major. As it relearns, it will adjust the fuel/timing maps to the style of driving it sees during that time. i.e. if you drive it @ WOT all the time, it will think you are racing and will compensate based on that criteria... not that I am suggesting you do that by any stretch.

Gary, if resetting the ECU does not help your situation, call me at home when you get the chance. 272-8015
And also (he makes it sound like I'm such a dummy,) I suggested a lot more than just resetting the ECU. You just don't want to admit that it could be your AM stereo that is causing the problem, or the installation there of. And besides that, it was 4:45 AM (or thereabouts) when you called. I'm not at my sharpest until at least 5 AM.
