Default No start after stall

Hello all... I've put about 3,000km on a new 2006 Mazda3 GS (manual). Something happened the other day, which has me scratching my head.

From a stop, I accidentally took off in third gear and stalled the car. Upon trying to re-start the car, I could not get the engine to turn over (just a short grinding noise), until I turned the key to the off position and back to the on position.
Could someone please enlighten me?

Thanks

if the engine didn't shut down and you tried starting the engine the starter would grind. perhaps this is what happened?

I see what you're saying, but it wasn't such a violent sound, and I'm sure that the engine had shutdown.
Thanks though.

maybe the car's ECU still thought it was running and the ECU wanted to save you from grinding the starter so it did nothing untill it knew the key had officially turned everything off.
