That's what Scott had on his... not to be confused with the exhaust that comes stock on, or would even fitthe Mazdaspeed3.

I think he's talking stock.

A cheap alternative to a whole new exhaust is just get a stainless steel 2.25" inlet/outlet aftermarket muffler, cut out the stock unit and weld in the aftermarket. You'll change the soundwithout having to change the whole exhaust system.

The Mazdaspeed exhaust I had was a catback 2.5" inlet/outlet diameter system installed on a 3i 2.0L sedan.

Ahh.... TruBendz Exhaust is who I was thinking of. http://www.mazda3mods.com/mazda3_per...e_exhaust.html

A local member has one that cost him just <$300 complete. I can't say that I am all on impressed with it, but it does offer sound and the Magnaflow muffler system you seem to want. He has a 2.3L HB and it's 2.25", 2-3/8" would be the biggest recommended.
If you have a 2.0L don't get anything bigger than the 2.25". For comparison, the OE system is 50mm, or 1.97".
I think you mean 2.25", Scott? I've seen them, and they remind me very much ofthe Magnaflow system. They may even be built by MF. Besides a 2.5" is a little big for that drivetrain w/o a lot of mods.

Flowmaster
Magnaflow
Borla

I had a flowmaster on my 4 cyl Jetta. It gives a nice throaty sound without scrambling your brain in the cabin.
On my 6 cyl Golf I had a Magnaflow. You couldn't use your phone if you were in the car and if you drove a long distanceyour brain felt like it was swimming. But I loved every second of it. Even if people from four blocks away and alarms in parking lots did not.

Borla also makes performance exhausts; I have only heard them from the outside of VW 4 cyls. They sound nice on the outside. I do not know what the cabin noise was like.

You can usually find sound clips on the manufacturer’s websites and on you tube. Most companies make their exhausts California street legal as a de facto.

BTW take the sound clips on you tube for face value. Most microphones will not pick up a lot of the noises that you will hear in real life. Find some car meets and listen for an exhaust that fits your liking.

Borla, I've read (no personal experience here,) is said to have the quietest AM exhaust for the 3 series, but w/a nice throaty rumble.
Thatsounds pretty good to me, but our OP is looking for the best bang for the buck and is on a limited budget, it seems.
Who of us isn't.I would be doing a lot more if I didn't have other responsibilities and financial obligations. (turbo, 6-sp, LSD, lightened flywheel and stage1 or 2clutch, etc...) As it is, as it is w/most of us, we have to makethe best of itw/the budget we have. 'Nothing wrong w/that though.
A very long time ago when we were each about 16 yrs old, a friend of mine described a car as "A hole into which you pour money and time." I have never forgotten that, and he too was a car guy but mostly used his wits and skills to mod and repairhis rides. Later, I did the same w/the Volvo and the Honda I used to run. Junkyards can be fascinating places.

This is not practical. Unless you are Drag Racing running the engine WOT for several seconds.

While this thread is very old consider.....................I suggest to start you own thread about your project and questions. Generally, what we are doing is "hijacking" another member's thread.
