Angry Faulty Glovebox Lights

Extraordinary experience with Mazda yesterday. I own a 2013 Mazda 3 and have had issues with the glovebox light which was replaced at last service. Yesterday I was told it had burnt out & melted the wiring and the repair would cost $4000 +. After spending the day there, and being offered the car back with the circuit still "hot" to which I expressed concern about a fire, they removed the faulty globe. They are looking at second hand parts for me and won't accept responsibility because its been deemed "wear & tear". I looked at them and said touching it twice is 6 years is hardly wear & tear!!
Has anyone else had this experience? I see from chats that glovebox lights are a common problem with some people questioning if they were even installed.
