Odd. Question. When you plug in the new stereo and turn the car on what does the display say? "Hello"? "Bose"?

If by some chance the replacement stereo is the bose one then it doesn't have the internal amp that the non-bose one has so it would have nothing outputing the sound to the speakers.

Reading your post it sounds like the CD player on your old HU died, correct? You should be able to remove the CD changer portion of the new HU and put it onto the old one. It would require some disassembly (which if you're uncomfortable with the idea I wouldn't attempt). AFAIK Mazda stereos don't need to be programmed in order to work, at least not in the US.
